“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is God’s power to us who are being saved.”

Evangelizing the UNM Campus in Albuquerque

This month during our State Mission Board, a few of us got the opportunity to team up with some of the staff and students from the Christian Challenge of UNM in Albuquerque. I was fortunate to team up with Matthew Espen, pictured above. During our time walking through campus, we were able to talk and share the gospel with several students. The last student we talked to was probably the most open to talk with us. His name was Sid. The following summary is what Matthew wrote regarding our conversation with Sid that day:

“Today, Luis and I went on campus and shared the gospel with a student named Sid. Sid is from Nepal and is studying computer science. He comes from a Hindu background and said that he lives to help others. We went through the 3 questions with him, sharing about the problem of sin and the free gift of life and forgiveness we’ve been offered in Jesus. Sid agreed that there is something fundamentally wrong with the human heart, but he said he believes that all religions basically teach the same thing. We shared John 14:6 with him, emphasizing that Jesus is the only way to God, and encouraged him to think more about the gospel. Please pray for Sid, that he really would consider the message of Jesus and see that there is no hope to be made right with God apart from what Jesus has done for us on the cross.”

Matthew and I had a wonderful time sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. I want to encourage you to take the time and visit the nearest Christian Challenge and ask if you can come alongside of them and go out and share the gospel with college students that are anxiously waiting to hear the gospel message. You will never forget the experience!

THE LOSING SIDE OF KEEPING SCORE

(& WHAT TO DO INSTEAD)

By Prepare/Enrich

You track the stats of your favorite athletes and sports teams. You monitor your daily sleep and activity score on your watch or phone. Heck, you even tally points during a friendly game of Scrabble. Wouldn’t it also make sense to keep score in your marriage?

Most of us probably know the correct answer is no, but that doesn’t mean we don’t do it from time to time, even subconsciously. Maybe you’re keeping a mental tally of how often you’ve done one of your spouse’s usual chores, logging how much time they’ve spent on a solo hobby, or tracking how many times they’ve gotten up with the baby. Scorekeeping comes in many forms, but they all have one thing in common:

They sabotage any sense of being a team.

Why? Well, when you focus on specific numbers or quantities being “even,” it shifts your mindset to “you vs. your spouse.” Are you doing more around the house than they are? Do they get to go out with their friends more often? Have you “won” more arguments lately?

But here’s the thing – marriage isn’t about giving and getting in equal and specific amounts. Instead, there will be times you carry more of the load and times that your spouse does. It’s part of the ebb and flow of marriage; the understanding that you have each other’s back and are there to lift each other up when you need it – no matter what.

So why do we do it?
Keeping score can seem like an easy solution to your problems. If everything is equal, then there shouldn’t be anything to be upset about, and you’d be satisfied, right? Not quite. The truth is it’s usually not just about the “thing” you’re keeping track of. The tendency to keep score often sprouts from a bigger underlying issue that is causing – you guessed it – resentment. For instance, are you feeling like you need more quality time together? Do you need to make some adjustments to how responsibilities are divided? Are you feeling burnt out it in a certain aspect of your life? Is there an unaddressed issue you need to bring up with your spouse? Once you understand the connection between keeping score and resentment, you’re in a better position to get to the root of the problem.

What can you do instead?
Next time you catch yourself keeping score in your marriage, take some time to reflect on what’s really going on. If you’re not sure right off the bat, it can help to work backwards from the thing you’re keeping score on. For example, are you really mad about that particular thing or do your feelings stem from an underlying issue that’s related to it? Once you’ve pinpointed the source, it’s time to ask yourself if you’ve actually talked to you spouse about it. If not, then make that a priority. They might not even realize they’ve made a mistake or that you’re upset. If you’ve brought it up with them before, then this might indicate an ongoing issue that requires more attention from you both. Pulling yourself out of the scorekeeping mindset and seeing the problem from a broader perspective is the first step toward working together to come up with a solution.

Keeping score can seem harmless, until you’ve become entrenched in the “you versus your spouse” way of thinking. Learning to identify and address the actual issue in order to do what’s best for your marriage is the best way to come out ahead.

IMMIGRATION RECENT ISSUES

Churches have a long history of providing sanctuary to immigrants and others. However, the recent policy for enforcing immigration laws in sensitive locations such as in churches has changed. The Department of Justice in the State of New Mexico has provided a document to assist New Mexico's places of worship in responding to immigration issues.

CHURCH PLANTING in new mexico

Missions Mobilization

If we want to reach New Mexicans for Christ, we need to partner with Church Planters that God is using and bringing to our state. We have compiled a list of Church Planters that are currently in need of partners to come alongside in prayer, outreach, building endeavors & financial support. By partnering together, we can make a huge impact! Bring it before the church and pray how the Lord will lead you in supporting our Church Plants.

Contact our Mission Mobilization Team Leader, Matt Thackerson @ 505-604-9018 or email: mthackerson@bcnm.com to find out more on how to become a Church Plant Partner.

MINISTRY CENTRAL

Partner With These Ministries

You and your church don't necessarily need to begin a ministry or reinvent the wheel that is already at work sharing the gospel and meeting the needs of your local community. These ministries have already done the groundwork and even been given an open door at key places and have been accepted by the people they are ministering to. For the most part, these ministries are also in need of volunteers and financial support. Bless each other by partnering and serving your local community together!

At Your Service

My hope and prayer for these newsletters is to keep all of us updated on the Kingdom work that is being done in the SouthWest region of New Mexico. God is at work always and He has us serving together in this area for such a time as this. Let’s partner together to reach all of New Mexico with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and let’s see God’s mighty goodness all around us! Always remember that we are on the same team – God’s team!

Let me know how I or any of our BCNM staff can serve you and the wonderful church family you are a part of. It is our privilege and joy. God bless you!

Please email any testimonies, events, pictures & info of a particular outreach, mission trip or special event, and flyers of workshops, conferences, or trainings that others may benefit from and that you would like me to share in future newsletters to lolmos@bcnm.com
